What's the trick to getting it on the Start menu?

Click the start orb so the start menu is displayed, right click an empty
area on the right hand side of the start menu, properties, customise,
scroll down to recent items and tick it, ok, ok.

No trick. Just follow the instructions...

Right-click the Start orb, click Properties; on the Start Menu tab, click
Customize..., scroll down to Recent items, check the box. ;<)
