I was having a problem with windows photo viewer for a while, kept getting "com surrogate stopped" when trying to open a picture.
I downloaded a program called Alchemy, a form of drawing program. And a minute or so into it the screen froze, first it was slow, then froze, then it blinked on and off, and kept doing so, the music however was still playing. Keyboard was working at this time. Though there was a bigger pause between songs played.
I was watching something on VLC at one point, when the screen came to a complete stop, sound was still playing. I couldn't open catalyst.

Formatted the computer.

Com Surrogate issue gone at least.

Yesterday I was watching something on VLC and everything on the screen was ok, though the sound stopped and nothing plugged into the usb's worked (keyboard mouse etc..)
Event Viewer calls it "The previous system shutdown at*** was unexpected"

Just now i tried to play something with Spotify, and after a minute or two the music started to sound like a broken record, could move the mouse tried to close spotify, but after that everything froze up.
Event Viewer calls it "The previous system shutdown at *** was unexpected"

"The platform firmware has corrupted memory across the previous system power transition. Please check for updated firmware for your system" is what i got when entering sleep.

So what could be causing this?

Welcome to the forums Maq!

Have you got any external devices connected to this machine? It sounds like a problem is occuring during sleep mode and the state isn't preserved correctly.

The error you got is a catch-all which recommends updating your system BIOS, which would be worth a shot :)

Also, which "ACPI Suspend Type" are you using in your BIOS? Are you using S1 or S3 at the moment? It should be under the power settings page.

edit: It looks like there is a recent BIOS update here : http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/BIOS_Model.aspx?ProductID=3164

Thanks Ian!

Yeah i got quite a few external devices, most of them connected to the monitor, and when that one shuts down they shouldn't be causing any problem. I've had a problem where the computer starts up again either right after it has entered sleep, or hours after. It said it was caused by a usb device but it didn't say which. But i'm guessing it's the keyboard mouse receiver.

It's on S3

Thanks! I've updated the Bios now.

Though my main problem is all the freezing, it seems like it's becoming more frequent.
