File Extension Type .THU?

C

I'm not sure if this is the right group for this, but lack of
knowledge for a better one, I will post my question here!

I have a number of family photos and most are .jpg, but I have a few
that are .thu. Windows 7 cannot open these files as it does not know
what program the extension is associated with (and nor do I). Does
anyone have knowledge of this files extension and what program is
required to open them.

Would appreciated any input/suggestions (FYI I cannot go to the source
as I do not recall who provided the files - many years old!).

Thanks for any help/tips.

You can use TrID or TrIDNet (or a number of similar programs) to identify
files where you don't know what it is:

If you only have a single file to check, you can use the online version:

Whenever I run into a similar problem, I go to filext.com. One of
the suggestions offered for "thu" is "Firefox Bookmark Backup File ".
Another is "Command and Conquer Renegade File".

Thanks for the reply.

I looked at the first two links and they want to install additional
programs on my system. Don't think I want to do that.

The 3rd link, I went to it, search for one of the files, selected it
and clickek "Analyze", and nothing happened. Doesn't see to work?

You really, really don't want to click on links that you are
not positive of. Thats how people get trojans, malware, rootkits,
and viruses on their systems.

Have you tried to open the files with Irfan?

Sorry, I was going to recommend fileformat.info which I remember as
being very good for this sort of thing. But it comes up empty with
"thu".

I have an old Family Origins family tree program. It saves all the
pictures as the original .jpg and as a .thu thumbnail. It shows the
thumbnail view on the page, and you click on the "camera" icon and it
brings up the full size picture.

Openn the file in Windows Notepad (yes, it's a text file editor but
trust me it does open just about anything). Look at the start of the
goo that the Notepad window shows. Often, programs write their own
names into files. Even if it doesn't have a program name, it may have
a file "type" like JPEG or BMP or something.
If you can find out what type it is, change the extension to that
type and try Irfanview viewer. If it's a valid graphics file Irfan's
little gem will open it.
If it does name the original program, try that or try an equivalent.
Like, if it's from LibreOffice, try MSOffice for example.

Another thing to try is just delete the extension, leave the name and
see what Windows makes of it. Windows might have a default that can
read it.

That should read "Open the file...", of course. I *can* spell, I just
type poorly.
Anyway, I should have added that some programs from the lovely
Microsoft write their names at the *bottom* of the file when Notepad
reads it.
Patience is. Notepad can take *ages* to scroll down a large file even
on a truly massive computer with loads of RAM.

There's a very nice free program called Free File Viewer
<http://www.freefileviewer.com/>

"Download and install FreeFileViewer 2012 and you will be able to view
documents like DOC, DOCX, PDF, TXT, XLS, XLSX, images like JPG, PNG,
GIF, PSD, videos like FLV, MP4, MOV, MPG, audio files like FLAC, MP3,
OGG, WMA, and various other formats like BIN, CFG, DAT, DIZ and and many
many other file formats."

I resolved my problem. The old images (they were many, many years
old!) had been converted to .jpg awhile ago, but the other images
remained - I probably kept them for safety years ago and forgot them.
Saw them recently and could not remember where they can from. But, am
good to go now. Thanks all!

Hi, Charlie.

Good for you! ;<)

Just to get the rest of us out of suspense, though, could you please tell us
the name of the application that created the *.thu files? Someone else
might ask that question some day and it would make us feel so smart to have
the answer for him.

Sorry, I don't remember, it was so long ago - back then, I was working
with a number of different Genealogy programs and one of them probably
created them, but I don't remember. I've been using .jpg since that
conversion.

A long time ago when digital cameras first came out I seem to remember
having a Canon with which they bundled a cataloguing program called
Breezebrowser. I am fairly sure it produced a small thumbnail of about
80k of each .jpg file which had the .thu extension.
