FBI Moneypak Virus

I'm at my wits end. I have a friend who keeps getting his Windows 7 desktop
computer infected with the same FBI Moneypak virus. He knows I can help
with computer problems, but now I'm beginning to question if I am doing
something wrong.

Every time he gets infected, I run CCleaner, Malwarebytes Pro, TDSSKiller,
and Microsoft Security Essentials. He has Malwarebytes Pro and MSE set to
do a FULL system scan every night (one after the other), and I also reset
Internet Explorer, and everything seems OK when I'm done. Three or four
days later, it's infected again! He openly admits to watching porn on his
computer, but I occasionally do the same thing and my computer NEVER gets
infected and I only have MSE on mine.

Short of wiping the hard drive clean, is there ANY other tool I can use to
do a better job of cleaning this up? I've already tried the "stop watching
porn" suggestion, and he just won't listen.

You told him what to do, and he doesn't want to listen? If it were me,
I would just shrug my shoulders and not want to help him with the
problem.

Like the others have said, it might be time to cut bait and leave.

Alternatively, dig into his porn habit just a bit. There are safe
places to get it and places that are less safe. Maybe he can find
better places to get his fix. Not all porn comes with a payload, if I
may use that term.

Next time, tell him it's gonna cost him $200.
Then install all the freeware stuff you have and teach him how to use it.

Get your friend to fix his own problems ?

Or, suggest using an alternate OS for risky behavior (like a Linux LiveCD).
Linux has Adobe Flash, a poor implementation of Silverlight, and some
level of media support via tools derived from FFMPEG. Not ever site out
there, can be accessed equally well from Linux.

Or, set up a virtual machine environment (VirtualBox or Windows Virtual PC based),
and load another OS in there. There may be an option in one of those, to
"revert" the OS after a session, so nothing is kept from a session. Virtual
machines can either be operated to maintain state information from one
session to the next, or to offer you an opportunity to throw away changes.
Throwing away changes would include changing settings in the OS, so
it's not exactly convenient. But once you've got the OS tuned the
way you want it, inside the virtual machine, you could use the revert
feature from then on, to preserve the working state of the guest OS.

Microsoft used to offer Windows "SteadyState", which was another way to
lock down the OS on a computer. But that's no longer supported. But you
can cook up a similar setup with a virtual machine.

Virtual machines are not completely bulletproof, and I'm expecting
any day now, to find malware that can "burrow out" into the main
OS. So while the VM approach works today, it might not be a complete
solution in the future.

It's malware - as long as there is money to be made from creating it,
there'll be a constant battering of computer defenses. So the thing
you think "absolutely protects" you today, is bound to be useless
tomorrow.

It's probably not the porn:

Symantec reports that religious websites are more likely to infect
computers with a virus than sites serving up naughty adult material.

"It is interesting to note that Web sites hosting adult/pornographic
content are not in the top five, but ranked tenth," the report states
on page 33. "Moreover, religious and ideological sites were found to
have triple the average number of threats per infected site than
adult/pornographic sites. We hypothesize that this is because
pornographic website owners already make money from the internet and,
as a result, have a vested interest in keeping their sites
malware-free – it’s not good for repeat business."

As expected, the top five most-infected sites are blogs and web
communications (19.8-percent), hosting and personal hosted sites
(15.6-percent), business and economy (10-percent), shopping
(7.7-percent), and finally education and reference (6.9-percent).

And of course Facebook is a proper pesthouse. I had a brother whose pc
was repeatedly infested until I finally ordered him to stop using
Facebook. No problems since.
