You need to set it up in the BIOS for AHCI rather than IDE
or Legacy IDE for the hot-swap function. Windows also uses a
separate driver so you may have problems if you did not have
it set that way when the OS was installed.

I did a change from IDE to AHCI on my Asus P5K PremiumWiFi-AP Intel P35
(Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 a few months ago. Win XP sp3
I had fitted an external e-sata plate

to make use of the e-sata connection on my removable hard drive enclosure.
I forget how I did it, but came up with the solution quite quickly by a
doing a google search.

I have an Intel DG33FB mobo and tried to get eSATA to work with no
success. I finally contacted Intel and they told me my mobo does not
support eSATA and it will not work.

XP is touchy about SATA in general. I had to slip[stream the SATA drivers in the
XP install to get it to load the OS. If your MOBO does support SATA, Google
slipsteam SATA drivers. There are several utilities that will do it.
