Heck, all ny other computers, one of which is, even, is a Vista one, can
speak to oneanother. Not so my netbook with Windows 7. OMG, my son mut be
correct - should have gone for Linux? Some new crap, which will only speak
to Win7 networks?

Jesus why do we bother? Onwards to Linux. possibly?

What a mess of a post, but I'll try to translate.

You have a netbook with an unspecified version of Windows 7.
You have a computer with an unspecified version of Vista.
You have "other computers", each with an unspecified operating system.
All of your computers are currently networked, but you're having
trouble integrating the netbook into the existing LAN.

On the netbook, be sure you're using the same workgroup as the others,
disable the Homegroup feature, and let us know where that takes you so
we can go from there. I assume you're using DHCP so we're not dealing
with IP addressing issues, so let us know if that's a bad assumption.

And along with Char's suggestions, read this:

Sharing files and printers

Worked well in my circumstance.

I needed to get Linux sharing files with Windows, and that didn't work
immediately either. It required the user to figure out which
software package was missing, and install it. When I started
working on the problem, I couldn't believe it wasn't part of
the base configuration.

So Linux has just as many problems.

Be careful what you wish for.

Fortunately, whether you use Linux or Windows 7, there are other
users to help you, and make up for the design deficiencies in
either case. "Disable HomeGroup" is the key, as already stated
by the other, helpful posters.

Too bad you wanted to whine more than you wanted a solution. There is
one, you know.

Yes yes, go to Linux.
