I don't know if I just missed it or there really is no native way to
encrypt a directory or drive in Win7. Anyone?

Depending on your version of Win7 then Bitlocker for drive
encryption and EFS for file encryption.
Entering 'EFS' or 'Bitlocker' into Help and Support search will display more info.

You might try TrueCrypt. I use it on a USB drive.

I've tried it but that would not encrypt existing Windows directories,
such as "My Documents." You have to create special directories whose
content will be encrypted. That is OK for many situations but not for
mine.

Ummmm WRONG

Yes u can encrypt folders in win7 home ver,

To encrypt a folder or file
  1. Right-click the folder or file you want to encrypt, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the General tab, and then click Advanced.
  3. Select the Encrypt contents to secure data check box, and then click OK.
Note:
The first time you encrypt a folder or file, you should back up your encryption certificate.
If your certificate and key are lost or damaged and you do not have a backup, you won't be able to use the files that you have encrypted.
