Downloading earlier versions Word documents

I'm having trouble downloading Word files in 9703 versions of Office with my new Windows 7 system when these files are sent as attachments in emails. Also think this may be affecting download of files such as Adobe Acrobat and opening old emails from Outlook Express.

Any suggestions about how to address this.
