Don't have permission to access win7 from winxp

Bob H

I have 2 machines here, 1 has windows 7 pro on, and the other has WinXP
SP3 on.
From Win7 I can see the WinXP SP3 machine and access shared folders on it.
But, from the WinXP SP3 machine, even though Win7 is on the network
list, I don't have permission to access it, even though I can print from
WinXP through the network printer.
I have shared folders on the Win7 machine but they are not showing on
the WinXP SP3 machine, and neither are the public folders.

What do I have to do to get Win7 accessed from WinXP SP3

I have googled this problem , but most of the links relate to a reverse
of my problem.

Thanks

Install accounts on both PCs that have the SAME Username/Password
combination. (and privilege level)

Then you should be using the Authenticated User Group on a file share
for the permissions. File Share permissions for a user account is a
permission level above a folder or file permissions on the share for a
user account.

If you create a file share, then you may need to go to the Advanced
Button and set permissions for the share. If the user has the same named
user account and password on the two machines, then one can set the
Authenticated User Group on the share, because the user account being
challenged for access is an account that can logon to the machine an
(authenticated) account in the Authenticated User Group.

Or the user account itself can be selected and given access permissions
on the file share permissions.

Or one can set the Everyone User Group on the file share permissions
with required permissions. Using the Everyone User Group means that any
user account can access the file share, and the user account doesn't
need to be authenticated.

Again there two types of permissions that can be set on a file share.

1) User account permissions to access the File Share itself.
2) User account permissions to access a file or folder within the file
share.

On business versions of the O/S, an admin can set these permission types
on the share. I don't know about the non business versions.

If the Win 7 machine doesn't have one of the 3 accounts with the proper
permissions on the share itself, then it's going to be 'access denied',
for a remote user trying to access the file share.

Do NOT use homegroups in Windows 7. Only other Windows 7 hosts can
connect to a homegroup and share those resources. Make sure your
Windows 7 host connects to a *workgroup* so pre-7 versions of Windows
can also share those resources.

I had the exact same problem. I followed the tutorial in the link in Char
Jackson's post and it worked a treat. Full unfettered access from Win 7 to
Win XP and Win XP to Win 7.

Many thanks Char. I recommend you do the same Bob H.
