does not always change focus

J

Jeff

Windows 7 64 bit home premium.
Every now and then Windows does not seem to change focus to the correct
window. I noticed this happening occasionally when I click on a link in
an email. The link opens in my Firefox browser but sometimes the system
does not change focus to the browser so one needs to physically click on
the browser to see it. Caused me to open the same link several times
before I discovered the problem.

Similar thing happens on my wife's new W7 laptop. She is in Word, clicks
on "Save as". The window to name the saved file opens -- but behind
Word's main window and the focus does not change to it so it remains
invisible behind the main Word window. If she tries to do anything else,
Word flashes and I am called to explain what happened - which turns out
to be that Word is waiting for an entry on the save as Window.

This did not happen when we were running Windows XP using the same
programs. Because it happens on different computers all running W 7 64
bit home premium and in different programs (I have other examples) I
suspect the problem is in W7 and not the individual programs. Am I
right? Is this a known problem?

Does not seem to be a mouse driver problem either. I use my laptop's
touchpad and my wife uses a USB mouse,

I have 3 Windows 7 systems in the house now and I've seen the behavior
you described on each of them. I believe it's a known Win 7 issue.

I am afraid your wife has got more common sense than you! ;-)

Thank you. That is what I thought.

Oh! noffink! ;-)
She just has! You did say she uses the mouse as opposed to the touchpad,
didn't you?

Yes she does because she never moves the laptop and uses it as a
desktop. I too would prefer a mouse to the touchpad but my laptop is
always on the move and it is easier to not to have to carry one more thing..
Anyway, mouse or touchpad - the problem is the same which is what the
question was about.

Deliberate top post: This is a refreshingly civilised ng, but would it be
possible for posters to snip most of a long thread when they only have a one
word answer? Some of us have work to do!

Don't tell me *you* also are a touchpad user! Use a normal cheap mouse
with two clickers and a wheel + a long, long tail and you won't complain
of having to caress the touchpad to go to the bottom of the page. You
could then use your fingers to caress something else with more pleasing
results. Or you could of course use the keyboard and go the the bottom
of the page just with CTRL+Home key combination.

What am I saying? I meant the *CTRL+End* key combination! The CTRL+Home
key combination will take you to the top of the page.

I can agree with you there. I too have 3 Windows 7 PC's (1 home premium
and the other 2 are professional), and they all behave exactly as
described. So I would assume that it's a known problem that will
hopefully be corrected in a future service pack (but I'm not holding my
breath waiting for it).

Yes, but _why_ leave old, no longer relevant material in? What purpose
does it serve?
