Disc fragmentation

I have Win7 64 bit.

My disc fragmentation is turned on to run at 01.00 every Wednesday and the
next scheduled run is on 03.11.20 at 01.49. I leave my PC in sleep mode at
night and am wondering if it will operate the defragmentation in that mode.

No, it won't, but if the defrag starts before the computer goes to
sleep, it won't sleep.

When is 03.11.20?

As others have said, if the PC is sleeping when this task is supposed
to kick off, it won't kick off. Alternatively, if the task is running
when the PC would otherwise go to sleep, it won't sleep while this
task is running.

I know I have one of my computers set up to wake up out of hibernation
and record some sound for me. The sound recording program then shuts
the computer down when it is done.

I guess it depends whether you can set up your defrag to operate this
way.

me the whole disk defrag thing seems to be an atavism -- with early
PCs it actually had some function, but with modern PCs it has no
noticeable impact on operating speed. I wonder, too, if all that
thrashing of the read/write head actually shortens the lifetime of
the disk.

Well, I've defragmented nearly every day on a 9 year old machine and using
the same hard drive, no problems.

You're very wrong in a blanket statement like that. FILE defrag has a
measurable improvement in performance when many files are fragmented,
YOU may not be able to see it on your computer, but we see it on many
computers as well as servers.

Users who are clinging to FAT32 will benefit from frequent defragging. NTFS
users, not so much.

Several people replied to the effect that they had seen an
improvement, so I'll accept that though I personally have not. But
still ... WEEKLY????

I agree. Weekly is just overkill. Twice a year is more reasonable,
especially if you copy, move, delete, etc. LOTS of files.

I can't answer for the OP. Personally, I stopped defragging my hard
drives when I moved to Windows 2000, roughly 9+ years ago or so. I
don't think there's any significant benefit to be gained for the
typical home user. At work, where we have thousands of servers
handling millions of requests daily, we wouldn't dream of defragging.
It would add a significant I/O load to the systems without providing a
significant benefit.

When Emrys Davies posted his OP, I looked into my Task Scheduler and
found no such option for the defrag schedule.

I looked again, and pretty hard, since I didn't believe it. For one
thing, I have scheduled such things as backups to wake the computer from
sleep.

Maybe the way to do it is to create a new schedule outside of the
Microsoft folder in the scheduler. Or maybe that won't work.

Scheduler, Task scheduler library, Microsoft, Windows, Defrag,
double-click/open the the ScheduledDefrag item, select the Conditions
tab and then check off the box for "Wake the computer..........", OK out.

I doubt that I'll bother looking for the wizard.

I just looked at the Task Scheduler entry for Defrag. Apparently the
previously missing wake-up call is present on Wednesdays as well. I just
thought you'd like to know
