Desktop recovery tool

Is there a tried & tested tool that will recover my icon placement after reboot from safe mode or a change in screen resolution?

I found a Reg 'hack' for Vista & XP - but not clear if will work on 7.
Also found a Cnet tool but did not seem to work.
