Curious folders 12061008-000009b4-sasasasxsxs

In the temp folder under my user name every day there appear two folders
of the form datetime-00009b4-wsxedcrfqa
An example is 12061008-000009b4-1m0jm0jia8, where the last field
contains a set of random characters. These folders are in fact empty, but I
can't seem to find out what is creating them. Has anyone any idea? It is
possible that the time corresponds to "Diskeeper" running, but I haven't
been able to prove this. Also some do appear at non-scheduled times when as
far as I know Diskeeper is not active. I've looked at the event log, and
nothing there corresponds to the time stamp of the folders being created.

check the properties and see what program owns it or if it is a microsoft
file. Chances are it's only temporary and will go away.

Two folders that are empty in the Temp folder I don't think I would be
concerned about it all. :)

Not sure what you mean here. These are folders and as such just have
general properties.

Yes but they don't get automatically deleted. The number of them just
grows. After a week there are at least 14 of them. It's annoying!

Have you got Rapport security software installed by any chance ?
My bank recommended me to install that software and it left empty,
randomly named folders which just grew in number.

Nope. My Security is from Comodo, which certainly up till the last
few weeks has been pretty good.

If you can predict approximately when the folders might be being
created, you can use the Microsoft Sysinternals utility Process Monitor
(http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645) to find some
clues about what processes are creating them. The utility racks up a
ton of information, so you probably don't want to let it run for a long
time, but if you set it to watch for a little while you might catch the
culprit.

My bank did, too. Where are these folders and can one delete them?

ps: There is no 'temp' folder under my username.

I have lots of Temp folders scattered around, or I should say Windows
does because I didn't create any of them myself, but in this case I
think they're talking about this one:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp

Go to a command prompt and execute

echo %tmp%

and

echo %temp%

to find the official values.

I should say the official value, since they are the same here, namely

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp

which looks a lot like what Char Jackson posted :)

I'm officially allowed to have senior moments.

Anyway, found the temp folder, with lots of other folders. I recognise
all of them from various applications that have come and gone, including
that insidious avg control bar, that worms its way into all sorts of
downloads. But nothing from Rapport that I can see. I wonder if all
banks use the same code. Mine is from FD, a subsidiary of HSBC.

I'm fairly certain now that these folders are created by WLM, although
why this has started relatively recently I have no idea. Perhaps someone
else has noticed this behavior recently ... within the last 2 months
perhaps.

That's why the O/S has a "disk-clean-up" utility that can easily be used
periodically to clean up temp files and folders.

This technique of using a Windows folder as a marker is pretty widely
used. Personally I'd use a simple text file.
The folder looks more space-wasting than it actually is. In reality it's
just another entry on the disk index, and hardly exceeds the size of an
empty text file.

Oldster,
You replied to a post that was approx. 6 months old

WLM version 2011 RTM-QF3 was notorious for creating temporary folders in the wrong location
-> %userprofile%\appdata\local\
of the form - 16 digit hex
-> {A369A8B2-FC97-4F40-8258-8BF297CBBEA6}

That was resolved with WLM 2012 which now creates temporary folders and files folders in this folder
%userprofile%\appdata\local\temp

Normally what I've seen are files with a *.tmp extension and a folder with a random number (e.g. wlmail1768976332)...though since
it’s a temp folder and if Windows is operating as intended others may be created during WLM use and removed upon program closure.
