Creating a share in WHS from Win7

I have built a home server and have installed WHS 2008 on it.

I have created new folders for documents, media and files etc, and now
want to transfer said files over to the new folders in WHS.

I asked an IT guy at work what was the best way to do it, and hew told
me to create a share. So I started to do that from my Win7 machine, and
I got a message saying that the share could not be created because the
folder I wanted to share was not indexed, and then asked me if I wanted
to know how to index the folder, or something similar.

I was going to do that until I recieved a message saying that if I did
index the said folder on WHS, then that folder would be created on my
Win7 local HD.

Ok, but what is the point of that regarding the fact I built the server
to put all the files on and not keep them on my local HD.

So what is the best way to transfer files across the a folder in WHS?

There are several ways to get the files transferred.

1. Instead of creating new share(s), use one of the existing shared
folders, such as in Users\Public. Either 'push' (from XP) or 'pull'
(from 7) the files into the shared folder, and then on the 7 PC
distribute them to your new folders.

2. On the 7 PC, share the folders you created and set the appropriate
permissions, then 'push' (from XP) the files into your shared folders.

3. On the XP PC, share the folder(s) where your files are currently
located. Then from the 7 PC 'pull' the files over the network,
dropping them into the appropriate folders that you created.

There are lots of other ways to accomplish the same thing, but this
might get you started. It seems where you were going wrong was in
trying to share a folder on the 7 PC from the XP PC. When you want to
set up a shared folder, do it from the PC where the folder resides,
not from another PC on the network.

Open the WHS folder in Windows Explorer. Then open Windows Explorer a
second time and open the folder containing the files you want to
transfer. Position and resize the two Windows so you can see both of
them. Drag the files from the place with them to the WHS folder and
drop them there.

In my network there are 4 Win7 PC's only, all of which can see the
server and its folders.

Basically, what I want to do is to transfer files and media across to
the server's folders so that all of the Win7 PC's can access them.

No way is "better" than any other way. If it works, it's as good as
any other way.

One way may be *easier* than another, but it's hard to imagine
anything much easier than the above.

Do it like Ken suggested. If it works, you're done. If it doesn't
work, you'll probably have to 'share' the target folders. That's how
sharing came into the conversation and why I suggested the methods
that I suggested.

The Folders you created on WHS are shared on your network.
You do not need to share folders on your PCs.
Copy/Cut/Paste or Drag and Drop file you want to share from your PCs to the
WHS folders.
In future you can Save files directly to these folders and Read them from
there.
