hi all,

about 3 weeks ago I built a new computer with windows 7, Asus motherboard, AMD Athlon II x4, 4 x 2gb Kingston ram etc and over the last 3 weeks I've had 10 BSOD. It seems to be random, ie not happening when I run a particular task. Unfortunately windows has not given me anything useful to go off. I really need a point in the right directions, ie is it ram or is it a software conflict etc. I've attached a zip of the .dmp files. Please if someone could point me in the right direction that would be great.

thanks!!!

Hi aalaptop and Welcome to The Forum.

Well, there is good news! Your dump files are all the same so should help in narrowing it down!

STOP 0x0000000A: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Usual causes:
Kernel mode driver, System Service, BIOS, Windows, Virus scanner, Backup tool, compatibility

Your latest dump file lists USBPORT.SYS Fri Mar 11 04:37:16 2011 as the probable cause. This is a Windows System file and for it to be the cause of your crash is highly unlikely.
Old and incompatible drivers can and do cause issues with Windows 7, often giving false error codes.

As a Priority:

AVG is known to be a cause of BSOD's on Windows 7 systems. Suggest that you uninstall it. Download the correct AVG Remover for your system (32 or 64 bit).
If you have AVG ID protection installed, download the AVGID Protection Remover from the above link as well (it wouldn't hurt to download and run it anyway). Download BSOD friendly Microsoft Security Essentials as AVG's replacement. Uninstall AVG through the Control Panel. Re-boot to Safe Mode and run the AVG Removal tool(s). Re-boot to normal mode and install MSE. Make sure your Windows firewall is enabled!

Do you have Daemon Tools / Alcohol 120 installed? If so, do a manual search for sptd.sys. If you find it:
The sptd.sys driver is notorious for causing BSOD's with Windows 7. It's a driver used and installed along with Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120 which you'll also have to uninstall.
Then use the correct (32bit or 64bit) download from Duplex Secure - Downloads to uninstall the SPTD.SYS driver.
Make sure to select the uninstall button! DO NOT SELECT INSTALL!!

Virtual Drives
Some alternatives to DT/Alcohol for drive emulation that do not use SPTD.SYS (In no order).
DVDFab. Very small at just over 1Mb installed and can emulate up to 18 drives.(My preference).
PowerISO (The program is a trial but the drive emulation is free forever).
Virtual CloneDrive

Drivers with Updates:

nusb3hub.sys Fri Dec 10 04:50:35 2010
nusb3xhc.sys Fri Dec 10 04:50:35 2010
A June 2011 set are availabe Here.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (a)
An attempt was made to access a pageable (or completely invalid) address at an
interrupt request level (IRQL) that is too high. This is usually
caused by drivers using improper addresses.
If a kernel debugger is available get the stack backtrace.
Arguments:
Arg1: fffff88005977ff8, memory referenced
Arg2: 0000000000000002, IRQL
Arg3: 0000000000000001, bitfield :
    bit 0 : value 0 = read operation, 1 = write operation
bit 3 : value 0 = not an execute operation, 1 = execute operation (only on chips which support this level of status)
Arg4: fffff80002e221ae, address which referenced memory

hi, thanks for your help.

I will try disabling AVG but its never caused me grief before.

I do not have Daemon Tools / Alcohol 120 installed, nor do I have any virtual drives.

my motherboard is an ASUS M4A87TD-USB3, could this problem have something to do with the usb 3? I have the latest bios.

The other question on my mind is what triggers this? I cant seem to find anything in common with the crashes.

Well apart from the two known troublemakers I've mentioned your drivers are clean. So its going to be something deeper. So pin the cpu-z snips/screens to a post.

(I asked about DT as you have an a(random numbers).sys driver in there. That's a typical DT driver).

Can you stick the other 3 spd slot#'s up please! You have 8gb of ram but have only shown the one (2gb) stick. The slot # has a drop down window for each slot available.

I will try disabling AVG but its never caused me grief before.

I do not have Daemon Tools / Alcohol 120 installed, nor do I have any virtual drives.
Disabling is NOT removing, the AVG drivers are still there to cause issues. You should use the removal tool available from the manufacturer

The reason he asked about Alcohol 120 is because you have sptd.sys on your system. Whatever is using it is not so important as removing it. As mentioned, download the 64bit version (since you have 8GB ram it's a valid assumption you have 64bit OS) of Duplex Secure's sptd.sys removal tool.

Both of these can work fine for many people but it causes issues for some machines. It's best to get your system stable and BSOD-free, then you can reinstall them and see if it remains stable. Logical.

hi, I thought I had fixed it because it was fine for 5 days but there was two crashes over the weekend, see attached. I have also attached the cpuz screenshots of all 4 sticks of ram.

I was reluctant to uninstall AVG but I am desperate now.

Could it also be an issue with one of my devices plugged into the USB? ie my printer or ups?

thanks for your help!

I actually do this for "fun". I like to try and help people out. At the end of the day I, or nobody else, can force you to remove AVG, which is a known cause of BSOD's on Windows 7. So, as long as you are content with it, best of luck!

(It takes a while to type out a full response, I feel, like you, why bother?)

A freebie before I bin the dump files!! Pre Windows 7 driver. i.e. outdated.
