can't make file associatoin

I just installed Office 2010 on my Win7 system. I found that it would
not run a .pps (a powerpoint show file) because pps file extension
was not set up with Powerpoint as the default. I have used "open
with.." dialog many times in the past to fix these association issues
but when I went to do that I found that Powerpoint is not one of the
available choices to pick from. How do you get a program to show up
in the list of possible default programs for that dialogue???

Right click a .pps file in Windows Explorer and choose "Open With". In the
window that opens choose "choose default program". If the program you want
to use is not listed click on "Browse" near the right bottom. Find the
..exe file you want to run that program with. Make sure you click a check
mark in the box before "always use the selected program to open this type
file".

If you want the .pps slide show to play when executed, choose PowerPoint
Player as the program. If you want it to open with straight PowerPoint for
editing, chose PowerPoint as the program. You can still play the file from
PowerPoint but you'll have to click on Slide Show.

Right click on a PPS file, choose Open. The system not knowing what kind of
file it is will give you 2 choices, (from memory here...) 1 is use the web
to find a program and the other is to browse your system. Choose the 2nd.
Make sure "Always use this" is selected then hit the browse button and
navigate to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12" or
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12" (depending on if you have
Windows in 32 or 64 bit and which Office 2010 you installed), select
POWERPNT.EXE (or if file extensions are turned off, POWERPNT should be all
there is with a type of Application), hit Open then OK.

That was what I originally tried and it refused to use anything but
the programs listed "above the line". The programs I browsed to
simply didn't get associated even though they are supposed to. I even
uninstalled and reinstalled the entire Office 2010 and it still did
not associate PPS files with PP. If you saw the other messages in
this thread you saw that I did find a solution...someone wrote a
better file association program then MS did.
