Can't install SP1

X

XS11E

Win 7, 64 bit Ultimate.

Couldn't install the RC version, can't install the released version,
install ends with a It didn't work! message, E_Fail(0x80004005)

Message decodes as "We have no idea what went wrong, love Microsoft"

All updates are current, I ran sfc /scannow from a command prompt, ran
w/o AV, ran in Admin mode (the real Admin mode), did this, that and the
other thing.

Any ideas?

Google is no help, maybe SP1 is too new?

Have you any "hidden" updates that you refused at the time?

If you go here:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itproSP/threads

and type 0x80004005 in the forum search box, you may find
something of use - looks like you are not alone.

Only language packs and I don't think they could solve the problem?

Please don't top post, OK?

I had the same yesterday: download stopped at 67% with the same error.
Continued today and there were no problems at all: download went on from 67%
and 10 minutes later everything was installed. Susspect the update servers
are/were overloaded.

(and yes, I know: I have to get another newsreader other then this piece of
crap Live Mail 2011. Tried some (like Free Agent) but I don't like the feel
of them at all. So, still searching ... or has anyone a tip on a easy
newsreader? I don't care about mass downloading, yEnc or whatever: just a
plain simple newsreader like Outlook Express was, would do fine.)

Note to self: first read whole message, then write :p
Only now see you talked about the install, not the download.
But I did get that same error during download ....

You're right, lot's of others! Most are marked resolved but none of
the fixes did anything for me.

I've heard from others the only fix is to wipe, re-install, load SP1
and then rebuild the system. I'm unwilling to do that now, maybe
later.
There is a tool to check the "store" in Windows 7, but I don't think
this has anything to do with 0x80004005. You can always run this
for the fun of it. I hope you did a backup before you started
this adventure...

It's also possible there is the "black hole" update, which likely
was in your last Windows Update. This could be the one, that
previously had no "undo" in Add/Remove :) Again, I doubt this is
the issue - the SP1 probably checks that this is present. I suppose
you could try a search on your C: drive, and see if 976902 is on
there somewhere, as evidence you got it.

Have you tried Thunderbird yet, from mozilla.org ?

I appreciate your responding even if it didn't solve my problem.

Just FYI, I also downloaded the ISO file and burned the DVD so I could
continue trying to install w/o waiting for the download but it seems to
make no difference whether I use Windows Update, download the SP1 File
or use the DVD I burned, all result in the same failure.

I seldom have a backup older than 3 days but I probably should do it
again....
Doesn't help, I did try that earlier.
It's also possible there is the "black hole" update,
I do have that but I don't think that causes any problems AFAIK.

Hi, XS11E.

Any clues in this KB? There are several possible problems listed:

You do not have the option of downloading Windows 7 SP1 when you use Windows
Update to check for updates
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2498452

This was what clued me in that I had to UNinstall SP1 RC before I would be
offered the final SP1.

Win 7 (no SP-1 RC), IE9, WLM 2011

Downloaded from Windows Update in about 30 minutes. No drama - no
interruptions, piece of cake.

Just a hunch, disable "System Restore" and try again.

Arrrg....

Bobster, you are posting with Microsoft Windows Live Mail 15.4.3508.1109

It is broken, it does not insert the ">" quoting marker, so it looks like you
posted the question instead of the op.

No clues there, I had no trouble downloading either the RC or the RTM
but neither will install.
