Cancelling Shut Down

J

jbm

Just as I hit the "Shut Down" button on the Start Menu I realised I had some
more work to do before I closed down for the night. Made me wonder, is there
any way to cancel this operation, because it isn't the first time I've done
it. Old age, senility, dementia, call it what you will; it was my repeat
prescription that had to be ordered, which I should have done two days
ago!!!

In the Start, Run Box, type shutdown /a

shutdown /? lists all options

Create a new text file on the desktop type shutdown /a
Then rename it "Stop Shutdown.bat"
Double-click it to activate.

I think your best bet would be to change the default action of the
shutdown button.

See here how to do that:-

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/changing-windows-7-shutdown-button.aspx

If you change it to, say, "Switch user" then, when you click on the
"Start" orb/button, you will see that the "Shutdown" button is renamed
"Switch user"

If this is not enough to make you think before clicking it then no
harm done. Just log in again and no programs will have been shut down.

Next to the "Switch user" (or whatever you set the default action to)
is an arrow head. Hover your mouse pointer over that to get the other
options. This way you have to make the deliberate decision to select
"Shutdown".

Download a gadget that will do exactly what you want. There are
several.

Yep! Old age, senility, dementia, gotta be one of them. I never thought of
that way. That's how I had it set up on my old XP machine, with Restart as
the default. Thanks for the help.

Old, decrepit and definitely past it jim

Change the function of the 'shut down' button to 'hibernate'.
This is faster to do (usually) and faster to recover (restart).

I suspect you have a ton of processes in the background that make
'shut down' slow (thus giving you time to reflect!). Remove the
unneeded process to speed up your whole computer.
