I just tried to highlight names and it works ok here.
Here's how I did it:

Tools > Message rules > News
New
In the top box tick 'Where the From line contains people'
In the middle box tick 'Highlight it with color'
In the bottom box click on 'contains people'
In the box type 'Ophelia'. Click on 'Add'.
Click on 'Ok'
Back in the bottom box click on 'color'.
Click on the down arrow and select your colour, Fuchsia.
Enter a name for the new rule.
Click on 'Apply now'.
Where it says 'Apply to folder' browse to alt.windows7.general
Click 'Ok'.
In the top box select the rule you just named.
Click on 'Apply now'.
Finished!

Click on 'Apply now'.

**I only have the option to 'save rule'

**When I click on that it all closes and says rule ok

Where it says 'Apply to folder' browse to alt.windows7.general
Click 'Ok'.
In the top box select the rule you just named.
Click on 'Apply now'.
Finished!

Yes, thanks Dave, that worked, Ophelia is now pink (Microsoft's version of
Fuchsia).

On my computer 'Apply to folder' default to
'microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop', which is somewhat irritating
when I am setting rules in a different group.
Something to look out for.

Now to try this with 'delete' ... methinks that might not work in
newsgroups.

You might have got more people looking at your post if you had put
your problem in the Subject line. Don't forget this newsgroup is viewed
by many people in many countries and 'btw' looks like three random
letters to a lot of readers who's first language is not English.
(I'm assuming it means 'by the way').
