BSOD at shut down

Hi, I moved to Windows 7 Home Premium (32-bits) on my computer. I bought a new hard drive and I installed Win 7 on it. I kept the old drive with Win XP and when my computer boots I can choose between Win 7 and Win XP (I'm soon planning to get rid of the Win XP drive). Overall Windows 7 works pretty well, except that once in a while I get a blue screen when I try to turn off the computer (followed by automatic reboot). First I noticed that it happened everytime I turned off the computer after it had been in sleep mode at some point, so I disabled that. It helped a bit, but it's still happening, even with the sleep mode disabled (maybe 1 out of 3 boots).

Here is a typical example of an error message I'm getting after the blue screen (after automatically rebooting):

From what I could read on forums, this problem might have many root causes.

My computer is a Pentium 4, 3.0 GHz, 2.5 GB RAM. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well give us some more information:

1. Crash files from C:\Windows\Minidump
2. CPU-Z screenshots of these tabs: memory and SPD of each slot including the empty ones.

The settings are right but the sticks might be not matching well. The Samsung pair was manufactured in 2004, while Kingston was in 2010. The specs for the sticks are identical though.

The causer of your blue screens is NIPALK.sys which is a driver for National Instruments NI-PAL. The NI-PAL drivers are incompattible with Windows 7:

That's great, thanks a lot for the info. I looked around to get an updated version of that National Instruments driver, but I could not find anything. I think that for now I'll just uninstall it completely and see if that fixes the problem. I'll post again in a few days to let you know if this issue is completely gone.

By the way, did you see that the Ethernet controller driver did cause any trouble or should I update it just as a precaution?

Kari - I have noticed something looking at your RAM thumbnails you posted.

You have the Samsung 256MB sticks in Slots #1 & #3, while the Kingston 1GB sticks are in Slots #2 & #4. It should be the reverse and configured a little differently.

Whenever installing RAM sticks regardless of whether it's DDR, DDR2 or DDR3, the LARGEST sticks need to go in first!

Depending on your motherboard and its DIMM slot configuration it may be slightly different. My motherboard has slots 1,2,3, & 4. Slots 1&2 are Channel 0 and Slot 3&4 are Channel 1.

Your motherboard manual will tell you which slots are what channel. Put the 1 GB sticks in the first slots for each channel. Such as mine would be Slots 1 & 3 since those are the first slots for each channel. So I would put the 1GB sticks in slots 1 & 3, then I would put the 256MB sticks in slots 2 & 4 since those are the second slots for each channel.

Therefore the channels are balanced with the same amount of RAM per channel and the largest sticks in the first slots for each channel. Your channels should be 1280 MB or 1.25 GB per channel.

This is a snippet from my motherboard manual to give you a better idea of what I'm talking about.
