Hi,
I have Windows 64 professional running on an i5 3570 @ 3.4 GHz with 8 Mb RAM.
The graphics card is a Sapphire AMD Radion HD 7900 with 3Mb RAM
I use Saitek rudder pedals and throttles and a MS joystick. Also an Altec speaker system.
When running FSX I am using four monitors.
I have not used my MS Flight Sim (FSX) for about 6 months in which time various new software has been added to the computer. No new hardware has been added and I have not experienced problems when running FSX in the past.I have run FSX three times in the last two days and each time I have experianced a BSOD 0x0000001E, each time about ten minutes into the session.
I have captured three mini dumps which are attached.
I wonder if anyone has any ideas of what the problem might be.
Thanks for your help.
Pat

Mate,

I just had a quick look and it appears to the video drivers crashing the computer.
Because I have seen the name Sapphire show up a lot lately I would suggest the following:
  1. Download video driver release 13.1 from AMD HERE.
  2. Uninstall all your current AMD software.
  3. Install ONLY the driver NOT any of the other AMD software.

See how that goes.

If that fails to work try the same as above but for the latest and Beta drivers HERE.

If there are still problems let us know and we can enable driver verifier and dig in to it a bit deeper.

Shintaro, Thanks for your very quick response.
I did as you requested, deleted the AMD programes and downloaded the driver 13.1 from AMD. I installed only the driver and nothing else. This allowed me to run FSX before it crashed after about 20 miniutes - a little improvement. I have included the minidump from this BSOD.

I then uninstalled all the AMD software and drive and then downloaded the AMD driver v 14.4. (beta). I installed only the driver.
FSX then ran for about ten minutes before crashing. The BSOD showed that it was collectin Dump info, but failed to save it., so I have no minidump for this event.

I forgot to say in the original post that all programmes are installed on an OCZ 248Gb SSD.

I really do appreciate your help and regret that I will involve you in more work.

Best wishes, Pat

Shintaro,
Just managed to get another BSOD and saved a mindump in case it's of use.

By the way, I did a couple of three months postings in Manley in the 70s when I flew BA 747s. We had some really good times and the kids enjoyed it, though young son got stung by a jellyfish swimming off Manly beach!

Thanks,
Pat

Could you also please run a virus scan, outlined below, as I am seeing tmp (temp) files
Code:
tmp999F.tmp Sat Jul 26 23:29:37 2008 (488B26C1)
in the driver list. I might be being paranoid, but it could be a virus or Malware.

    1. Download and run TDSSKiller.
      1. Accept the "End User License Agreement"
      2. Accept the "KSN Statement"
      3. Select "Change Parameters" and Select:
        • Verify file digital signatures
        • Detect TDLFS file system
        • Use KSN to scan objects
      4. When the scan is complete the log file is in C:\ It will have a name like "TDSSKiller.3.0.0.34_04.05.2014_08.05.16_log.txt"
    2. Install Malwarebytes (Free Version)
      1. Select "Threat Scan"
      2. When it is completed, please upload the log file from: C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\Logs
    3. Please download and run Windows Defender Offline.
      1. Click "Next"
      2. Click "I Accept"
      3. Select Either: (Typically it is either CD/DVD or USB)
        • CD or DVD
        • USB
        • ISO file
      4. Cllick "Next"
      5. It will create a CD / DVD / USB and will boot and scan your hard drive offline.
    4. Download hwInfo and run it.
      • Click on "Save Report"
      • Make sure the Export Format is HTML
      • Click "Browse" and select your "Desktop"
      • Give the file a name like MyComputer or your Forum username.
      • Click on Save
      • Click on "Next".
      • Click on "Finish"
      • Put the newly created MyComputer.html (Or what ever you decided to call it) in to a zip file and upload it to the forum.

Shintaro, Thanks once more for your help.
To trouble shoot the possibility of the BSOD being caused by a USB periphory, I disconnected every one in turn and ran FSX. I experienced a BSOD on every occasion. I attach some more minidumps.
I am beginning to think that I need to uninstall FSX and all its peripheries and start again, because it used to work well. At the same time I'll probably do a clean install of Windows 7 (64) professional as my 248Gb SSD is running out of room because of all the scenary and I wish to get some more. At the same time I'll put all my day-to-day software back on my old PC and keep my fast one just for my simulator. If you think this is a good idea, I won't bother you any more and go ahead. If I re-experience any more BSODs, I'll Come back to you or start a new thread, whatever you think best. It'll be a while untill I get it all up and running again.
Thanks, Pat

Shintaro,
Sorry I missed the bit about the virus scan. I'll do that (I run Bitdefender) but I will follow your instructions. I have just seen that Microsoft is recalling their August Windows update and are suggesting that users remove this update if it has been installed as amongst other things it is causing crashes. This means editing the registry, but I do have instructions of how to do it. Do you have an opinion about this? Once I have done the virus scan I'll retest FSX.
Best wishes, Pat

Mate,

Have you checked for FSX patches HERE?

It appears that FSX caused one of the crashes.
Have you tried turning off BitDefender whilst playing FSX?

In order for me to get a better idea of what is crashing you will need to enable Driver verifier, instructions below.

Driver verifier

The Driver Verifier tool that is included in every version of Windows since Windows 2000 it is used to detect and troubleshoot many driver issues that are known to cause system corruption, failures, or other unpredictable behavior.

***FIRST: Please backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise.
Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Windows 7 Startup Repair feature.)
  1. Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
  2. Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
  3. Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
  4. Select:
    ---- Special Pool
    ---- Pool Tracking
    ---- Force IRQL Checking
    ----Deadlock Detection
    ---- Security Checks (Windows 7 & 8)
    ---- Miscellaneous Checks
  5. Click "Next"
  6. Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
  7. Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
  8. Select "Finish" on the next page.
Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen.
Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly.
The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out.

Will I see anything when I enable Driver Verifier?

No, Driver Verifier configures Windows so that people looking at the crash dump files get (in most cases) more detailed information about what actually crashed the computer.
How Long should I wait for a crash?

- If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for at least 36 hours of continuous operation.
How do I turn Driver Verifier off?!

- Reboot into Windows (after the crash) and turn off Driver Verifier by going back in and selecting "Delete existing settings" on the first page.

- Or press the Windows Key + R, and type in "verifier /reset" (Without the quotes)

- Then locate and zip up the memory dump file and upload it with your next post. then locate and zip up the memory dump file and upload it with your next post.
I can't get in to Windows, what do I do?

- If Windows will not start and get to a login screen or desktop, because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.

- If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from your installation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that you created.
How do I put the crash dump files in a Zip file?

Instructions on putting files in a Zip file and extracting (Taking them out) again are explained HERE.

However if you decide to reinstall it *might* fix the problem, quite often it doesn't. If you do decide to reinstall I would also recommend that you update the firmware on your SSD. Be aware that updating the firmware on the SSD will wipe the drive, so best to do it if you are reinstalling.

There seems to be a motherboard F9 BIOS update HERE (your current BIOS is F6) BUT it is a last resort, as updating the motherboard BIOS can brick the motherboard.

If you were having crashes before the MS patch it is unlikely that it is causing your crashes now.

Hi Shintaro,
I have carried out the four requests from #6.
The logs are are attached. The Windows Defender full scan produced no problems.
The Driver verifier has been loaded and I await any crashes!!
FSX is up-to-date with all patches.
Although old, the Saitek drivers are the latest available.
I will run FSX with Bitdefender off, rather than in game mode and see what happens.
FSX crashed after ten minutes with horizontal video lines across screen (not BSOD). Computer crashed in same fashion during restart.
I had to restart in safe mode, so no internet. This is now from my second computer. There were no minidumps from these two crashes.
Unable to run main computer now except in Safe Mode (several tries)
Using event viewer in Safe mode I have produced a file of the Event 41 Kernel-Power. It won't upload, so I'll try a new post.
Once more, thank you for your time.
Pat Manley

I was unable to upload the zipped file, so have pasted it in here, I hope that's OK.
There were 19 of these identical events, including the last two today. This is the very last one.
Best wishes,

On your main computer turn off verifier (verifier /reset) and see what happens.

Also re-run Malwarebytes to see if it cleared the PUP.Optional.VuzeRemoteTB.A garbage.

The crash dumps can be in any of the following directories:
c:\Windows
c:\Windows\Minidump
c:\Windows\Live KernelReports\WATCHDOG

Hi,
Windows running normally (I had already run System Restore) with no problem at the moment. MalwareByte rescan carried out and all items have been cleared, giving zero threats.
I have found today's crashdump and it is attached here.
Thanks, Pat

Mate,
Could you please do this FIRST

Open regedit (Registry editor)
Take a screen shot of:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashControl]

And post it to the forum

Next please do the following:

  1. Click the Start Button.
  2. Type in cmd
  3. You should see cmd.exe in the list.
  4. Right click on cmd.exe and select "Run as Administrator"
  5. In the command prompt window type in:

wmic recoveros set DebugInfoType = 2
It should say that the command was successful.

The crash dump is missing some information.

Hi,
I have carried out a clean install of W7(64), a full update and installed Bitdefender and FSX - nothing more. Running FSX gave a multicolour striped screen which I presume is due to the graphics card. This happened every time. I then removed my Sapphire 9750 and replaced it with the original Sapphire HD 6670. I have run FSX successfully 3 times for over 8 hours continuous running with no failure - it's still running as I type this. I guess that you were correct in suspecting the graphics.
I have thrown the problem at Sapphire, the card is still under warranty, so I await their comments.
Thank you very much for your help, I guess that we can mark this as solved if you have no other comments, best wishes, Pat
