Looking for freeware backup program

2) works on Win 7 64 or XP Pro 32
3) backs up any given folder or drive, NOT the system
4) allows retrieval of any file or folder with subfolders.
5) works with terabyte size drives (can backup up whole drive)

Easeus Todo and Macrium Reflect are the two that get mentioned here most
often. See if either will do what you want.

Not Easeus. No NAS with the free version.

Also, Macrium does not allow individual file retrieval using the free
version.

I just copied some files from a Macrium image to my desktop using free
Macrium. I could read the test file I copied.

Text file, not test file. Sorry. Although the meaning is pretty much the
same...

The other two files were binaries and I don't have a hex file reader or
editor on the machine that I used, chosen because it's the only one with
Macrium Free.

Sorry, as I remember, without going back to the website, it says the
free version cannot restore individual files, so that is what I meant.
Since it is creating an image it most likely just copying files.
I have Macrium here so need to see how the copy is formatted i.e. tree
vs flat, compression and/or encryption options etc. Getting a little
smarter all the time.

Free Version cannot do what I need (from their website):
Differential and Incremental backups
File and Folder backup

If I was doing this all the time, I would pay for the version that did
that.

"It" can't, but you can. Once you create an image, you can browse through it
and extract/restore any file(s) that you'd like.

Understand but the first on my list was incremental backup. Free does
not do that for sure according to their website. Still looking.

I was just correcting the person who suggested that the free version doesn't
allow individual file retrieval. It does.

Glancing back at your list of requirements, does the free version of Acronis
True Image meet your needs? I know the retail version would, but I haven't
used the free version.

Also, is it important that you use a polished program for this task? It
seems that a basic script would pretty much do the job. Optional encryption
and packing can also be scripted, if necessary.

Look at: RoboCopy. xcopy, and xxcopy.
