Backing up OS

I have been using my laptop with windows 7 for a little under a year and a half now and I didn't back it up. It has a recovery section of the harddrive but I want to make a disc for the OS and just the OS. Is there a way to do this?

Control Panel > Backup & restore. Choose Create a Restore Disk.

That is essentially a bootable backup of the system files.
