AVG users BEWARE the latest 2011 free version update is crashing Windows 7

I tossed AVG about a year ago in favor of MSE.
I did too but longer ago. It worked fine for a long time then after one
of the updates it was giving me hell. Went to Avast for a while but it
kept telling me my Rosetta Stone was a virus. Went to MSSE and it has
never had a problem for me. Wife got some bug a couple times but she
plays several online games.

Me too.
But over a year ago I think.
I was getting way too many false positives and AVG were experimenting with
new features I didn't want.

Fair comment. I downloaded the latest [paid for] update last night, and it
didn't start up after the required Windows restart. I started it from the
program menu, and I forced it to update again from the unwanted installed
gadget, and after faltering a couple of times, it ran properly with all the
features working correctly. But some of the settings were reset to the
default values. Something seems to stop it running correctly on reboot, but
once running all appears to be fine. I used the computer a couple of times
earlier today, this being the third time, and all is well.

Don't use it any more. ClamAV is much better.

Hi, rfdjr1.

MSE = Microsoft Security Essentials

Get your free download here:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/pc-security/mse.aspx

I use it and heartily recommend it!

Same here on both my W7 and XP machines.

I'd gladly move to MSE if I could find some good reason to do so.

I think you will find (as I did) that MSE has a smaller "footprint" and
less of an impact on system performance than AVG(free, etc.). Naturally,
recent updates to AVG may have changed matters.
Each has it's pluses and minuses. I used AVG for several years, and
until MSE, relied upon it.

I went to Avira on one computer, and MS Security Essentials on another
one. They are both pretty good, but MSSE doesn't have any nagging
advertisements to upgrade to paid version.

For the past few days AVG has nagged me constantly about my copy
expiring and I had better send money, but today was the worst. It said
that tomorrow is the expiration date, and I COULD NOT GET RID OF THAT
MESSAGE. I uninstalled it at replaced it with MSE, thanks to this
thread. Thanks, all. And the real kicker is that I was running the free
version of AVG!

Back when I was still using it (free version) they nagged now and then
about it. Would pop up with some stuff about wouldn't I really like to
pay them, and bla bla bla about the great stuff the pay version did. I
switched to the MSE after they released it since I figured they (MS)
would be less likely to let out updates that would screw with their own
program. So far it seems to work fine, but then I don't go to sites that
claim to show the latest starlet with her panties down and what not. I
have a few times seen people who claim to know what they are doing say
you don't need AV. I am not that brave.

I met a Genie today that said she would grant me one wish.

"I want to live forever," I said.

"Sorry," said the Genie, "I'm not allowed to grant wishes like that!"

"Fine," I said, "then I want to die after Congress gets their heads out
of their a$$e$!"

"You crafty bastard," said the Genie.

That is annoying. You can block them with a group policy recipe, or via
a couple of other workarounds. I think I prefer Avast - it seems
reliable, and it doesn't nag ya.

So what does Avast offer you that the FREE and highly rated MS Security
Essentials does not?
