Avast (free edition) and Windows Defender

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1, IE10.

I should have asked this question long time ago................
I thought Avast was supposed to turn off Windows Defender.
I have Avast free edition, ver 2014.9.0.2006 installed, replacing MSE, about a month or so ago.
My Windows Defender is still running.
In fact, I've just checked on them. Both are running happily together.
Why is that?

Because in Windows 7, Defender is not an antivirus solution and is a separate product from MSE. As of Windows 8's version of Defender, it includes an antivirus and replaces MSE.
