automatic opening of external usb drives

In a previous W 7 laptop, when I attached an external usb device I got a
popup asking me what to do with it including an option to open and view
the files.

In my new W 7 laptop, when I attached an external usb device I don't get
that popup asking me what to do with it and I need to open "My Computer"
to find the attached drive.

How do I make the new W 7 system behave like the old one?

Have a look in Control Panel > AutoPlay
and make sure that the box marked 'Use AutoPlay for all media and devices' is set.
