Do a search on "remove Ask Toolbar". Apparently, some people
try to use the Add/Remove programs thing to get rid of it, and
it doesn't work.

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091127231027AAv4a1h

"This program is a BHO - Browser Helper Object - when used with
Internet Explorer. You should be able to disable the toolbar in
Internet Explorer with Tools - Manage Addons"

You could give that a try.

*******

Another site gives instructions like this.

"We also discovered during our test that files associated to AskBar
are not completely removed during the browser uninstallation process.
This is what happened to one of our readers, as shown in his comment
in our post "Latest Threats". So we present to you now the guide to
completely remove the AskBar Toolbar as promised.

How to completely remove the AskBar Toolbar:

Part 1

1. Open Firefox.
2. Go to Tools \ Add-ons.
3. Highlight "Askbar Toolbar" and then click Uninstall.
4. Restart Firefox.

Part 2

After uninstalling AskBar in Firefox:
1. Open CCleaner (if you don't have it yet, click here to download latest version).
2. Click "Cleaner", click "Analyze" and then click "Run cleaner".
3. Click "Registry" and then "Scan for Issues".
4. You will see "Obsolete software key | AskBarDis | HKCU\Software\AskBarDis".
5. Click "Fix selected issues...", close CCleaner.

Part 3

1. Open HijackThis (download from this site).
2. In the main window, click "Scan".
3. Select / mark the following:

* O2 - BHO: AskBar BHO - {201f27d4-3704-41d6-89c1-aa35e39143ed} -
C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\askBar.dll

* O3 - Toolbar: Ask Toolbar - {3041d03e-fd4b-44e0-b742-2d9b88305f98} -
C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\askBar.dll

Also delete if you see the following:

* O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [AskSBar Uninstall] rundll32 C:\PROGRA~1\UNINST~1.DLL,O -3)

4. Click "Fixed check", "Yes" and then "Ok".
5. Click "Main Menu", click "View the List of backups".
6. Select / mark the same registry files which were deleted in Step number 3.
7. In the right pane, click "Delete", or "Delete All" and then "Yes".
8. Close HijackThis and you're done.

Optional: Run CCleaner once more before you restart computer.

Now, I wouldn't follow that recipe to the letter. Instead,
look at all of the elements it makes reference to. The registry entries.

HKCU\Software\AskBarDis
HKLM\..\RunOnce <--- another reference to an AskBarDis file ?

and the program file it uses.

C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\askBar.dll

and then you may be able to construct your own removal procedure. Or alternately,
do additional searches using "AskBarDis" or "askBar.dll" etc.

What I'm surprised at, is the fact that the Add/Remove doesn't work
for the thing, doesn't get it treated as malware by many of the
malware sites, and then, resulting in better removal instructions.

Also, be careful if you're offered a tool that promises to remove Ask Bar.
It could be malware. If the removal tool you're offered is small enough,
you can upload the package to virustotal.com and have it scanned. A clean
scan on virustotal.com is not a guarantee that malware is not present,
but it is a start. (Obviously, the people crafting malware, can upload
to virustotal.com and check for themselves, whether they can be detected.)

For some reason the version of Windows Live Mail I've just landed won't
quote earlier messages - sorry about that.

What I meant to add was that I'd noticed that Java updates now come with a
(pre-ticked) option to install the Ask Toolbar and set Ask as the default
search provider. This sort of blatant commercial intrusion is utter
unacceptable in my view, and makes both Oracle and Ask something less than
preferred suppliers.

Unfortunately, this behavior is becoming more widespread.

It ends up that nobody is a preferred supplier any more :)

Hi, Phil.
For some reason the version of Windows Live Mail I've just landed won't

From the headers on your message:
X-Newsreader: Microsoft Windows Live Mail 15.4.3538.513

So you are using Windows Live Mail, Build 15, aka Wave 4 of the Windows Live
Essentials, aka WLM 2011. Yes, it will quote prior messages just fine.
What it won't do is properly indent those quotations and add the ">" or
other indication that it is a quotation. (WLM has some other flaws, too,
but many of us - including myself - find it quite usable in spite of those
shortcomings.) I manually added the ">" after copying your sentence above.

As you've learned by now, WLM 2011 adopted the Ribbon User Interface first
introduced in Office 2007 - and now Office 2010. This Ribbon UI takes some
getting used to, but it kind of "grows on you" and becomes comfy after a
short while. One key to getting comfy is the QAT (Quick Action Toolbar);
almost any command from the Ribbon can be added to the QAT and becomes a
one-click action. Did you use Outlook Express before Vista/Win7? One of
the most-useful features that we used in OE has become an "Easter Egg" in
WLM 2011; it is still here, but you have to know how to find it. ;>(

In the upper left-hand corner if the WLM screen are several tabs: Home,
Folders, View, Accounts. Before Home is another tab that has no label until
you hover your mouse over it, then the uninformative title "Windows Live
Mail" appears in a Tool Tip. Click this tab to see a context menu. Hover
over Options, then click Mail. Voila! There's the old familiar Tools |
Options screen from OE! ;<) This has tabs for Read, Send, Spelling and
others, just like before. Click the Send tab and, just like in OE, check
the box to Include message in reply. ;<)

Click that no-name tab again, then hover over Options. This time,
RIGHT-click on Mail and check Add to Quick Access Toolbar. An icon like a
sheet of paper with a yellow pencil on it will appear on the QAT. Clicking
this will open that Tools | Options screen without going through all those
other steps. ;<)

Spend some time exploring WLM 2011, Phil. It has plenty of things to gripe
about, but spend some time customizing it to suit yourself and you just
might like it, after all.

It requires a lot of care, to find "untainted" versions.

For Java, there are two downloads here, and the
"Windows 7, XP Offline filesize: 16.0 MB" seemed to be clean.
I used WINE in a Linux virtual machine, to inspect it first.
It's the online one, that may randomly have different bundled
software included. (Two users, may not get the same download.)
They can still play games with an Offline installer, but there
is more opportunity for the user to inspect it first. I was
really surprised that something wasn't bundled with that one.

Try uninstalling it using Revo Uninstaller. What I like about Revo
Uninstaller is that it makes a backup copy of your registry, then runs
the program's uninstaller. After the uninstaller does it thing, Revo
then scan your system for any remnants of the program, any registry
entries and files it find are then displayed and you are given the
option to delete them.

You can get Revo Uninstaller here:

http://www.revouninstaller.com/index.html

there is both a free and pro version with the pro version having a few
more neat features that aren't available in the free version.

Or just routinely use Revo Uninstaller instead of going through the
