Another Upgrade Installation Question

I have a machine with XP that I plan to upgrade to Windows 7 Home
Premium. I purchased the upgrade last year, but have not yet
installed it. My question is this - I will install a new hard drive
when I do this conversion. The Windows 7 upgrade requires a legal
version of XP be installed. My question is if I have to install XP
first on the new drive or is there a way around this?

Just run the Win 7 install twice and you'll be good to go.

Method #2 worked for me. No need for the "double install" somebody else
mentioned.

Can you install the new drive alongside the old one? If so, clone the
present XP installation to the new drive (Macrium Reflect Free would do
this for you -- or maybe a program on the disc accompanying the new
drive), then run the upgrade.

Or install to the new clean drive, and use one of the methods detailed here:

Thanks to all for the quick response, you provided a lot of good
information.

I had not thought about cloning the existing hard drive first - great
suggestion. I want to save the old hard drive until I transfer
everything I need to the new installation. This should be a good way
to do it. I have Acronis, so should be pretty straightforward.
