All open windows iconify/

I have a lot of windows open. Many of them are for FireFox.
Occasionally, as I run through the FF window looking for a particular
one, I'll accidentally do something that causes all the windows to
iconify. Is it possible to get them back in one fell swoop?

If by "iconify" you mean that they all collapse, leaving only
rectangles in the taskbar, you probably hit Windows+D. Hit it again
and they'll all come back.

If you mean something else by "iconify", please tell us what.

Hi, Stan.
Shikata ga nai...
The President-Elect of Rotary International for 2012-13 is Sakuji Tanaka,
from Yashio, Japan. In the current (February 2012) issue of The Rotarian
magazine, when asked about his road to the presidency, he said, "In Japanese
there is a word shikataganai - it's out of my hands, I can't control it. So
I ran, and I was elected. Now all I can do is to do my best."

Just thought you might like to know. ;<)

Iconify means put the item in the tray (task bar?) along the bottom of
the screen as icons. Neither Win+D or -M restored them.

And can you restore them from the Windows taskbar? Or are they somehow
permanently minimized (hidden) with only the taskbar button showing
(which is also showing when the app has a normal window)?

If Winkey+D was used to hide all the desktop windows, Winkey+D is used
to toggle them back. Winkey+M will not toggle back windows hidden by
Winkey+D. Winkey+M is one way only: it minimizes only (and its action
is not a recorded toggle for Winkey+D to untoggle). Winkey+D toggles
the normal/minimize state. Don't mix them together.

Winkey+D = Show desktop (toggled state)

Winkey+M = Minimize (hide) all windows on desktop
Winkey+Shift+M = Normalize (show) all windows to desktop

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_of_keyboard_shortcuts. There are
way too many for me to remember so I use articles like this or just
search Windows own help on "shortcut".

Um, okay. :)

(I was aware of the meaning, but not of the interview.)

Those aren't icons.
They sure aren't windows. If you hold your cursor over one, it will show
a bigger icon.

In any case, this withdrawal of all windows to a clean desk top has not
worked with the +D or -D method offered above. It may be a FireFox thing.

Here in the US we have a phrase with similar meaning.

Winkey+D works just as expected for everybody else. I don't know what
you mean by "-D".

It's not "a Firefox thing." Either something is messed up on your
computer, or you're doing something wrong.

He's probably pressing and releasing the Windows key, pressing and
releasing the + key, and then pressing and releasing the D key. ;-)

That's all I can think of that would explain the -D or +D thing.

Maybe I'll suggest he hit Any key to continue.

You should take a screen snapshot and upload it somewhere, like
imageshack.us, so we can see what you really mean. I'm starting to
suspect that you are asking about tray icons and have some utility that
minimizes programs to a tray icon (rather than the taskbar button which
is present when an application opens a window and the taskbar button is
there whether you have the app's window normal-sized or minimized).

R

Rodney Pont

Nope, I hold them all down. Maybe it has to do with where I have the
cursor.
All? You should mean both, it's Winkey and D to toggle them down and
back up.

No, it's just that the OP doesn't understand the meaning of the
notation "Winkey+D".

Other posters in this thread may have clarified it for him.
