Add Network Printer

Desktop: HP Pavilion p6625f (Win7 HP 64 bit)
Laptop: Sony VAIO YB series (Win 7 HP 32 bit)
HP P1006 Laser printer (installed to HP desktop)

I've had two previous 32 bit version netbooks and, in both instances, was
able to successfully add an HP P1006 laser printer over the network that was
installed to the HP desktop. However, with my new Sony netbook, I can see
the HP P1006 in the Add Network Printer wizard, but it first tries to search
Windows Updates, then says it needs another driver to add the printer. I'm
not sure what to do here. Any suggestions?

All input is appreciated. Thanks!

It looks to me like it needs the 32-bit printer driver and can't find
it. Have you tried downloading the 32-bit driver directly from HP and
installing it on the laptop?

I did consider that. However, I tried to install the 32 bit driver software
on the Sony laptop (the HP LaserJet P1006 has no Ethernet or wireless
connection options), and I got stopped at the "plug in the printer via USB"
command in the installation wizard. Then, I went back to the desktop >
Printer Properties > Security tab and checked the "manage printer" and
"manage documents" boxes (just a hunch). I went back and tried again thru
the Sony laptop and it worked!?!?

I didn’t' have to do that with the previous 2 Win7 32 bit netbooks.
Obviously, I'm glad the problem is solved but I'm still confused as to how
it got solved. In hindsight, I likely would have succeeded by first
installing the printer directly to the laptop using the 32 bit software,
then trying to add it thru the network as attached to the desktop. At that
point, it probably would have searched and found the necessary driver
already installed. Oh well...

Thanks for the suggestion!

It sounds like you only have the 64-bit driver on your PC that the
printer is connected to. To verify this on the PC that has the printer
connected to it, go into the Control Panel - Devices and Printers
window. Now right click on your printer and click on Printer
Properties, in the Printer Properties window click on the Sharing tab.
Towards the bottom there's a box labeled Additional Drivers, click on
it. In the next window that opens it will show you which drivers are
available (x86, x64 and Itanium). I'm willing to bet that only the x64
driver has a check mark... anyway if you were to put a check mark in all
3 boxes, the next time you have another PC connect to this shared
printer the host PC would then send the proper driver over to it.

You are correct vis-à-vis the additional drivers. I was hesitant to check
the other 2 boxes because "x86" made me think of an older OS, and I didn't
know what Itanium referred to.

After thinking about it more, it's possible that my aborted 32 bit driver
installation on the Sony laptop (stopped when it prompted for USB connect)
might have gone far enough to actually install the necessary driver anyway.
Either way, I'm just glad it worked out.

Thanks for your input, Roy.

Just a bit of info.

Windows uses "x86" to mean 32-bit versions for historical reasons, but
not necessarily for clarity :)

Itanium is a family of Intel processors, used mostly in servers, I
think, but in any case, if you had one you'd probably know it - meaning
it would have been part of the sales pitch, or a sticker on the
computer.

Yes, and yes. Microsoft is good at lots of things, but one of the
things they are very poor at is the names they give to things.
