SOLVED Acer 4736z no sound on 64bit

Laptop has 4gb ddr2 of ram. Has sound on windows xp 64bit but unfortunately when i tried windows 7 64 bit, there is no sound produced. Then tried to alternately remove one of the memory and whoala, there is sound. I have already downloaded the latest driver from Acer and even from Realtek but sigh... still have the same issue. Also found out the same issue with vista 64 bit. Please help! THanks!

I'm a little confused, do you mean you get sound when you remove a stick of memory from your laptop?

Do you know which chipset your sound card uses? I couldn't find it by googling.

it seems i'm not the only one having problems with this model of acer.

How strange - I'm don't understand how memory will only effect the sound.
If you need the extra memory - Perhaps something like this will help until a fix has been made.

i guess i have to resort to bring the laptop to acer's sevice support.

Update BIOS

ino is right, reduce ram to 3gb or less and sound works fine. Update BIOS fixes the issue. BIOS always needs to be considered when diagnosing hardware issues.

My Aspire 4736z is less than half the price of my Macbook and I can still run OSX!

Win7 64 Ultimate sound works fine after this update to BIOS revision 2.03. I'm using it right now with 4GB RAM.

They are talking about "most popular" NOT best quality.

Before I buy a pc, I call their tech support to see if i can understand their version of English. Sony usest to be the best tech support wise.
But now days, its Toshiba.

Big thanks to smknjoe, mine works too. For more information, I got the BIOS version 2.03 from http://www.helpdrivers.com/notebooks/Acer/Aspire/Aspire_4736Z/ Just save it on a flash drive, unzip it, then follow the instruction, your BIOS should be updated automatically on your windows screen. The computer then restarts itself, and then wham bam here come the sound!
