A problem in MS Word.

Can anyone tell me the answer to changing the default document type in
MS Word 2010? When I use "Save as" to change the name of a document, the
default document type is displayed as one template or another. I'd much
prefer the "Word document" choice without having to mouse down,
something I often forget to do. If there is one of those damn forums
that might have the answer, it might be a possibility but I hate forums!

But the URL says:

By default whenever you want to save documents in Microsoft Word 2010,
it offers you to save the document with a .docx extension (Word
Document). In case you want to save the file in a different format, you
need to select that type in the ‘Save as type’ section of the Save dialog.
Selecting a different file type each time you save may work fine as long
as you do it only occasionally. However if your work needs you to
continually create documents in a format different from the default
..docx type, it is tiring to manually switch to the other file type each
time you save a file.

In such scenarios you may like to change the default ‘Save as type’ for
Word 2010. Here are the steps to do this:

1. Click on the ‘Office Button’ at the top left corner of your Word 2010
document’s window. This will take you to the Backstage View.

2. Click on ‘Options’.

3. Click on the ‘Save’ tab.

There is not an "Office Button" that I can see tho there is a Word
symbol and clicking only seems to offer Restore, Move, Size, Minimize,
Maximize or Close.

File->Options->Save... The first choice on this page allows you to
select your default document type.

Thanks! That really worked.

I see that you've already successfully solved your issue, but for
future reference, the sneaky 'Office button' they're talking about is
shown in a picture at this link:
<http://www.dkszone.net/what-is-backstage-view-in-ms-office>

It's worth checking out since there's a lot of info available after
clicking that button.

The information in that link is obsolete.
The File tab has replaced the Office Button.

File » Options » Save » Save files in this format.

Have you never looked at File » Options before? All sorts of
customizations live there.

I can't account for the sloppy documentation, referring to the
"Office button". That was introduced in Office 2007 and replaced by
the File tab in Office 2010.

I have Office 2010, and I don't have that button. I have a File tab
to the left of the Home tab. When I click it, I have a vertical menu
strip:

Save
Save As
Open
Close
Info
Recent
New
Print
Save & Send
Help
Options
Exit

Word Help, when I search on "backstage", gives "What and where is the
Backstage view?" which says in part

"After you click the File tab, you can see the Microsoft Office
Backstage view. The Backstage view is where you manage your files and
the data about them -- creating, saving, inspecting for hidden
metadata or personal information, and setting options. In short, it
is everything that you do to a file that you don't do in the file.

"The File tab replaces the Microsoft Office Button and File menu used
in earlier releases of Microsoft Office."

I have MS Office Professional Plus 2010, version 14.0.4760.1000 (32-
bit). Which one do you have?

Thanks to Dave-UK and Stan for the updated info.
